There are moments in our Applecross/Ardross Jewellery Studio when time itself seems to stand still. Not because something has gone wrong, but because someone has entrusted us with a piece of their life. An elderly lady sat opposite me with her hands folded together. For a few moments we simply talked. Eventually she smiled, slipped her wedding ring from her finger and gently placed it in my hand. “I’ve never taken it off,” she said.
The ring had been worn every day for decades. It had celebrated anniversaries, witnessed the birth of children and grandchildren, travelled across Australia and quietly shared both life’s happiest moments and its greatest sorrows.
Years of faithful wear had left the gold thin. The claws protecting the diamonds had become worn. The ring now needed professional jewellery repairs if it was to be safely worn for many more years. Technically, it was a straightforward repair. Emotionally, it was one of the most important jobs we would undertake that week.
At Sinclair’s Jewellers, every jewellery repair begins with a conversation. Before we discuss rebuilding claws, replacing a ring shank, tightening gemstones or restoring worn settings, we first want to understand what the jewellery means to the person sitting in front of us.
- Is this an engagement ring?
- A wedding ring?
- A family heirloom?
- Has it been remodelled before?
Would you prefer it to look like new, or would you like us to preserve the character it has gained through years of wear?
There are no right or wrong answers. There is only the answer that is right for you.
Only when we both understand the work required do we begin the repair.
The details of the jewellery are carefully recorded.
The condition of every piece is documented.
Special requests are noted.
The repair is booked into our workshop system so every stage of the journey can be traced.
As she watched me complete the paperwork, I could see the same expression we often see from clients.
Part relief.
Part anxiety.
Leaving a treasured piece of jewellery with someone else always requires trust. As she stood to leave, I handed her the repair receipt. She thanked me, smiled, and quietly walked out through our front door. For the first time in many years, she wasn’t wearing her wedding ring. She would not see it again until we called to say it was ready.
What she couldn’t see was that, from that very moment, her ring had begun a carefully managed journey through our Applecross/Ardross Jewellery Workshop.
- Every jewellery repair entrusted to Sinclair’s follows the same disciplined process.
- Every engagement ring, wedding ring, pendant, bracelet and family heirloom is treated with the same respect.
- Every repair is individually assessed by the jeweller before work begins.
- Every stage is checked.
- Every stone is inspected.
- Every repair is cleaned, presented and prepared before we contact the owner.
Because repairing jewellery is only part of what we do. Looking after the people who trust us with their memories is the far more important responsibility.
In many ways, our work does not finish when the last claw is polished or the final diamond is checked.
It finishes when a client places their jewellery back on their finger, smiles, and says quietly,“It’s beautiful.” That is the moment we have really been working towards.
Many people ask us what happens after they leave their jewellery with us.
- Where does it go?
- Who works on it?
- How do we make sure nothing is overlooked?
The answer is found in The Sinclair’s Repair Journey (to follow)—the carefully managed process every repair follows through our workshop before it is returned to its owner.
